Age Interval:
Changchengian-Jixianian (Statherian-Calymmian), Ch-Jx (18)

Province:
Jilin, Liaoning, North Korea

Type Locality and Naming

Southernmost Jilin. The Laoling Gr was named by the Party of Regional Geological Survey, Jilin Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources in 1976. The type locality is situated in Laoling Mountain, Hunjiang City, southern Jilin Province.

Synonym: (老岭群)

Lithology and Thickness

The Laoling Gr is dominated by dolomitic marble, schist (staurolite and quartz schist), quartzite and phyllite, locally migmatized. The Laoling Gr is an upward succession of the Dataishan Fm, Zhenzhumen Fm, Huashan Fm, Linjiang Fm and Dalizi Fm. [See those formation entries for details.] The total thickness is recorded to 15,263 m.

Lithology Pattern:
Sandy limestone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The contact relation of the group with underlying Ji'an Gr is unknown.

Upper contact

Schematic stratigraphic section shows next higher regional unit is a Baifangzi Fm of Qingbaikouan (Tonian) (not in Lexicon). Regionally, next higher unit is the mid-Lower Tonian age Miaoshan Fm (SE Jilin).

Regional extent

Southernmost Jilin. The group spreads in south and central parts of Jilin, on west side of Laoling Mt. As a vast northeast trending zone, it extends west to Liaoning Province and south into Korea.

Fossils

The Laoling Gr bears stromatolites.

Age

The Huashan Fm and Dalizi Fm of the group (the middle and uppermost formations) were dated by the Rb/Sr on whole rock isochron method at 1860 ±124 Ma and 1728 ±70 Ma respectively. The group is temporally attributed to the Mesoproterozoic Erathem in the Lexicon. However, there are contradictory opinions on its chronology. Schematic stratigraphic section places as Changchengian-early Jixianian (Statherian-early Calymmian).
